LYNDY'S MONTEREY POP FESTIVAL TRIVIA & MUCH MORE...

*1* Yes, I was at the Monterey Pop Festival. During the three day Monterey Pop Festival there were Renaissance Faire like festivities. Booths were set up with folk art, tied died everything, art jewelry, flowers & more. I even had a special perfume oil essential made from my own pheromones. A suave of my sweat with herbs & Egyptian oil all in a handy little double sized coke vial, LOL!

Actually, the Monterey Pop Festival is considered important in rock history, because it is the precursor to the legendary Woodstock festival held 2 years later.

This wasn't your typical music forum/auditorium Rock Concert. There were picnic tables with free food. Everything from fried chicken to people barbecuing their own hamburgers & franks. Free punch, beer & wine. Not to mention people passing around joints. Musicians mixed with their fans & jammed/played their guitars on blankets around the grassy fields together, very peaceful fun... What an amazing ROCK CONCERT!!!

*2* I got to see on stage live The Jimi Hendrix Experience. Jimi Hendrix's set ended with his explosive rendition of The Troggs 'Wild Thing' & Hendrix’s iconic act of burning his guitar on stage, then smashing it to bits & tossing pieces out to the delirious crowd who were watching Hendrix’s first ever American show.

*3* This was one of Janis Joplin's earliest performances with Big Brother & The Holding Company... AND I got to meet her & Jimi Hendrix in person. Janis had an infectious laugh & Jimi acted shy.

At the Monterey Pop Festival, Jimi Hendrix meets Janis Joplin & Grace Slick of the Jefferson Airplane.

*4* Steve Bartek was my high school sweetheart's best friend & he lived right around the corner from me. We went to college together & we're in some of the same music classes. He played with the Strawberry Alarm Clock & was the lead guitarist for Oingo Boingo. Now he's still a wonderful guitarist, film composer, conductor & orchestrator. He hung around with all the musicians of that era & was constantly dropping by with the guys from Steppenwolf, Three Dog Night, Sweetwater & the Jefferson Airplane, etc... Because we knew these guys/groups we got them to play for our Taft High School dances. We were just pals, so I never considered anyone like they were famous rock stars.

*5* I played & taught piano starting at age eleven & back then I even jammed with a lot of these cool cats. Just garage band fun & some studio fun, not to mention a few LA Coffee Houses. Oh, Steve & some his musician buddies even tipied my house (front yard) with around 50 rolls of toilet paper. I still owe him one for that, he he...

*6* Heck, we're even related to Cher, yep Cherilyn Sarkisian is her maiden name. That's my husband's Armenian Grandfather John Sarkisian & Cher's father, nobody liked him. Promised not to go there though, what a mess!!!

OMG, Lyndy you are so LUCKY!

I've only been to the usual seated rock concerts. Nothing to write home about though. But I have met The Rolling Stones Brian Jones who attended the Monterey Pop Festival. Brian did not perform, he just partied with the crowd & his entourage.

No Rock Stars in my family only Rock Star Want To Be's!

Love & Peace, Greg

Hi Greg, thanks for the comment about Brian Jones.

I remember seeing him there. Brian wore a leather coat jacket with curly lamb collar & sleeves. Brian came with Nico who would occasionally sing lead with The Velvet Underground band at the instigation of their mentor & manager Andy Warhol.

Those were the days you could rub elbows with the elite because they were so down to earth. Will, at least in my circle of friends...

Love & Peace Back At You,
Lyndy

OMG AGAIN, I meant to say I'm glad the Southern California earthquake was not as bad as it could have been. Hope the big one never comes! You must be shaken like your Shake, Rattle & Roll comment.

I remember Brian Jones being polite & he was with a very pretty blond. Was that blond maybe Nico?

Also, does that mean Cher is your Aunt-In-Law? I read she didn't get along with her father because he messed around & left everyone when she was a little girl. Is that what you mean by a mess, because your husband feels the same way?

Love & Peace, Greg

Hi Again Greg, yes we're still shaken from the earthquake. AND I too hope the big one never comes.

Nico was a beautiful blond German singer-songwriter, fashion model, actress, keyboard player & a Warhol prodigy. That may have been Nico you saw with Brian Jones. Yet Brian had many romances. So you'll have to Google 'Nico' to see if you recognize her.

Yes, that would make Cher our Aunt-In-Law probably four or five times removed, LOL! John Sarkisian had many wives & children that he deserted. He ended up in Las Vegas. May John RIP, as well as all the rock stars from that era that have passed on.

Cher is truly a SUPERSTAR from all facets that just keeps on going like the Energizer Bunny. Cher, like my hubby want nothing to do with that part of their family tree. That's what I mean by a mess, a very complicated mess.

Love & Peace To You & Yours,
Lyndy

Hey Lyndy,

Lucky, lucky, you to have not only brushed musical shoulders with some of the all-time rock classics, but with other musicians like....Henry Mancini!

The only rock concert back then I went to was to see Rod Stewart in the early 1970's. Living in a small town in California's central valley didn't have too many celebrities.

My hubby was and still is a big rock fan with the Rolling Stones as his favorite. He attended one of their concerts back in 1968 while he was going to college.

Great memories for all!

Hugs,
Becky

VERY cool - what a wonderful experience!! I've certainly attended my share of concerts, but never met any of the performers (unless you count garage bands, lol)....

Great post, Lyndy - thanks for sharing!

Hi Becky, the 'Peace Loving 60's', 'Summer Of Love' & 'Flower Children' wanted freedom for mankind to enjoy the fruits of their labor...

They did not try intentionally to hurt their fellow beings in any way. They tried to become one with enlightenment of music, literature, art & spirit. It was a time you could leave your front doors unlocked & not expect a home invasion.

I miss the direction mankind was headed. One of peace, if ever so slightly still peace...

LOVE & PEACE,
Lyndy

Hi Carolee, it was MAGICAL... I remember Sandalwood, Frank & Myrrh incense in the air. It was a time of joy & harmony. Not like today's concerts where people might car-jack you on the way home. Or today's society that think it's OK to take & never give anything back...

MOTHER EARTH is crying for the return of everyone to understand the concept of WE ARE ALL ONE UNITED...
LOVE & PEACE,
Lyndy

Forgot to add - LOVE the new music...brings back memories!

Hey Lyndy, It's always fun to stop by and check out your blog. I love looking into the past.

Hey cool that you are related to Cher! I am not related to any rock stars myself. Maybe just my nephew. He plays the quitar in a band and is in college. He even taught himself to play the piano. That boy is sure talented. I love to listen to him play. He is a wonderful musician.

Hope all is well with you my dear.

Off to go craft. You know Halloween is just around the corner. YeaH!!!
